Board of Directors

Composition of the Board of Directors

Following the elections held at the Annual General Meeting the 12 September 2017, the association is governed by a board of directors of 19 members:

  • 10 Directors elected by Association Members at the Annual General Meeting,
  • 7 Directors appointed by At-Large Members, the national associations representing 10GW or more of installed capacity, or a regional body with 10 or more national members,
  • 2 Directors elected by Corporate Members at the Annual General Meeting,  
  • 1 Ex Officio Director, the Chief Executive Officer.

Also assisting the meetings of the Board:

  • The General Counsel 
  • The Chief Operating Officer

Marcelo Álvarez - Director

Cámara Argentina de Energia Renovable (CADER)

Marcelo Álvarez is Head of Solar for the trade group Cámara Argentina de Energia Renovable (CADER). He has worked in the solar industry for 28 years. Mr. Álvarez is also a member of the Board of IRESUD, a public and private consortium to develop photovoltaic solar energy technologies which target urban areas of Argentina.

Steve Blume - Director

Australian Solar Council

Steve Blume is the President of the Australian Solar Council. He is also the Chief Executive Officer of NoCarbon Pty Ltd., where he creates partnerships to plan, design and deliver large-scale commercial and community solar and renewable energy projects. Steve is a former political adviser and private sector senior executive, policy creator, change management consultant, business manager and public servant. Steve’s mantra for solar and other renewables is “deployment, deployment, R&D, deployment! We have the means to build a 100% renewables future, we simply need the will!”

Peng Heng Chiang - Director

Taiwan Photovoltaic Industry Association (Chinese Taipei)

Peng Heng Chang is Chairman of the Taiwan Photovoltaic Industry Association. He is also Chief Executive Officer at Motech Industries Inc. Dr. Chang previously served as a Vice President of Materials Management and Risk Management at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd. and both Vice President of Administration and Senior Director of Material Management at Worldwide Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Dr. Chang received his Ph.D. of Materials Engineering from Purdue University.

Gianni Chianetta - Co-Chair

ITALIA SOLARE

Gianni Chianetta is Head of International Affairs at ITALIA SOLARE and Chairman of The Green Consulting Group and of the Greening the Islands Conferences. Gianni served as President of Assosolare (Italian PV Industry Association)and has negotiated the five Feed-in Tariffs arrangements with the Government which caused the PV installed capacity to grow from 0,035 GW to more than 18 GW. In 2007, Gianni founded the Global Network of National PV Associations (NNPVA), which assisted in the development of the Global Solar Council. He has a degree in Mechanical & Management Engineering and master’s degree at: Middlesex University (London); Kellogg School of Management (Chicago); SDA Bocconi (Milan); Istituto de Empresa (Madrid).

Jan Clyncke - Director

PV CYCLE

Jan Clyncke joined PV CYCLE as Managing Director as of 1 April 2008.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Law from the University of Ghent in 1991.He continued his studies at Ehsal and Vlerick Management School .In his early career he worked as a manager of Production & Logistics in the meat industry before moving into the waste management sector. He was employed by the Dutch AVR-Van Gansewinkel Group where he executed several positions such as Project manager, Legal Environment and Government Affairs manager Benelux. In the last three years before joining PV CYCLE, he was in this Dutch company responsible for Corporate Health, Safety and Environment.

He has experience in setting up of voluntary and mandatory take-back schemes in Belgium and the Netherlands in household and industrial packaging waste, tyre waste, vegetable oil & fat waste, waste oil (lubricants), waste on electrical and electronic equipment, empty paint tin waste, flat glass waste, photochemical waste, etc.

Xavier Daval - Director

Syndicat des énergies renouvelables (SER)

Xavier Daval is president of the Solar Commission of the French Renewable Energies industry association (SOLER-SER) and Board Member of SER. Daval is founder and CEO of kiloWattsol. Ever since its creation in 2007 as a spin-off of an associated research laboratory of the French national research network CNRS, he led the company to becoming the most experienced French Solar expert and a respected European Technical Advisor in the field of photovoltaic projects with a track record exceeding 5GWp world-wide.

Daval is an Electronic engineer and former Director EMEA of a world leading manufacturer of tools for the electronics industry. Besides, Daval is associated teacher with ENTPE Engineering school and Lyon I University and guest lecturer for Entrepreneurship at EM-Lyon, one of Europe’s top 10 business schools.

José Donoso - Co-Chair

Unión Española Fotovoltaica (UNEF)

José Donoso is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Unión Española Fotovoltaica (UNEF). He has extensive experience in the field of renewable energy. From 1987 to 2001, he was Head of the Department of International Relations at the Institute for Diversification and Saving (IDAE).

Mr. Donoso was also Director of Promotion and Director of Sector Development of Gamesa for more than ten years. Between 2008 and 2011, he was president of the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE). He is a Member of the Spanish Energy Club, the Association of European Energy Agencies (ENR) and the Mediterranean Association Energy Agency (MEDENER).

Bruce Douglas - Chair

SolarPower Europe

Bruce Douglas has been working in renewable energy for 20 years and is currently the Chief Operating Officer of SolarPower Europe, a member-led association based in Brussels representing organizations active along the whole solar value chain.

Previously, he was Chief Operating Officer at the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) for 10 years, founding Secretary General of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and Managing Director of FLiDAR, an offshore wind startup company, which he led to profitability and exit over four years. He has a Master of Renewable Energy Systems Technology and is fluent in English and French.

Jörg Ebel - Director

Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft (BSW-Solar)

Jörg Ebel serves as Head of Public Affairs at IBC SOLAR AG and BSW Board Director. He has previously held the position of Director Deputy Office at the "Citizenship of Hamburg" as well as Staff Deputy Office at the Lower House of the German Parliament. 

Mr. Ebel has studies in Law, Sociology and Politics (Heinrich-Heine-University, Düsseldorf,  Westfälische-Wilhelms-University Münster and University Hamburg (Degree: LL.M.).

Jifan Gao - Co-Chair

China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA)

Jifan Gao is Chairman of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association. He is also the Chief Executive Officer of Trina Solar, which he founded in December 1997. Mr. Gao serves as Vice President of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME) and is a founding member of the Private Sector Advisory Board for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Mr. Gao received his Master of Physical Chemistry from Jilin University in 1988 and his Bachelor of Chemistry from Nanjing University in 1985.

Holger Gassner - Director

Innogy SE

Holger Gassner is Head of Strategy & Technology as well as Markets & Regulatory Affairs for the Renewables division at Innogy SE.

Previously, he was responsible for Strategy & Regulatory Affairs at RWE Innogy GmbH. He has been with the RWE Group since 1996, initially as project manager for power plant engineering in the generation sector and subsequently as executive assistant to the board. In 2003 he joined energy policy and environmental affairs division coordinating political issues on RWE AG group level.

Niveshen Govender - Director

South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA)

Niveshen Govender has a background in renewable energy policy with a focus on solar technology, sustainable/ renewable energy technology projects, environmental sciences, carbon management, climate change, project management/co-ordination, and enterprise development.

Currently Niveshen heads the South African Photovoltaics Industry Association (SAPVIA) representing over 170 members through the value chain of Solar PV in South Africa. He has worked tirelessly on skills development, socio-economic development, manufacturing, standards development and installation certification in the Solar PV space ensuring the advancement of the Solar PV market segments. He is also a member of the South African Renewable Energy Council (SAREC) promoting the increased uptake of renewable energy technologies through all spheres of Government.

Rodrigo Lopes Sauaia - Co-Chair

Associação Brasileira de Energia Solar Fotovoltaica (ABSOLAR)

Co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) at the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (ABSOLAR – Associação Brasileira de Energia Solar Fotovoltaica), the national association representing companies and professionals from all segments of the solar PV value chain with operations in Brazil. Co-founder and member of the board of directors at the Global Solar Council (GSC), the global entity unifying and representing the solar power sector at the international level.

Leading ABSOLAR's team since its inception and foundation, Rodrigo Sauaia serves as the main representative and champion of the solar PV sector in Brazil, directly interfacing with high-level decision makers, government officials, politicians, legislators, regulators, financial institutions, the media, NGOs, companies, and the civil society. He is an active national and international event speaker, media spokesperson, and strategic advisor to ABSOLAR's associate members, dedicating himself to promote the development of the solar PV sector and market in Brazil.

Pranav Mehta - Co-Chair, Chair elect 2019

National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI)

A national scholar throughout his academic career, Pranav Mehta is India’s leading, nationally-recognized technocrat. He is Chairman of the National Solar Energy Federation of India and Solar Energy Association of Gujarat. Pranav is also a Board Member and Advisor to several leading national and multinational corporations with solar operations in India and held leadership positions at Reliance Petroleum Limited, Essar Group and Tata Iron and Steel Company.

David Renne - Director

International Solar Energy Society (ISES)

David Renné is currently in his second term as the President of the International Solar Energy Society. He retired from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in 2012, after more than two decades of developing and managing programs on renewable energy resource assessment and analysis, as well as the integration of resource data into the Geographic Information System (GIS). He currently holds an Emeritus position at NREL.

Dr. Renné also serves as the Operating Agent of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Solar Heating and Cooling Programme Task 46, titled “Solar Resource Assessment and Forecasting.” He is Associate Editor of the Solar Energy Journal.

Abigail Ross Hopper - Director

Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA)

Abigail Ross Hopper is the President and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the national trade organization for America’s solar energy industry. She oversees all of SEIA's activities, including government affairs, research, communications, and industry leadership.

Jodie Roussell - Chief Executive Officer

Global Solar Council

Ms. Roussell has previously served as Head of Public Affairs for Europe, Africa & Latin American for Trina Solar and as Vice-President of the Board of Solar Power Europe. She served as a member of the E15 Experts Group on Clean Energy Trade Policy, and the International Energy Agency’s Energy Business Council.

Previously she was Head of Energy Utilities & Technology at the World Economic Forum, where she was a Global Leadership Fellow. She served as Head of Strategy for JA Solar, and co-founded the American Council on Renewable Energy in Washington, DC.

Ms Roussell holds a B.S. from Georgetown University, and an MBA from IMD. She speaks 6 languages including English, German, Mandarin Chinese, French and Spanish.

Colin Yang - Director

Trina Solar

Colin Yang joined Trina Solar in April 2010 and currently serves as their Chief Branding Officer and leads the branding and Public Affairs team of the company. He has twenty years diplomatic experience including his service at the Chinese Embassy in Thailand and the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco. He has over ten years experience in corporate public affairs including his service as the Director for Government Communication of Cisco Systems (China) and Vice President for Government Affairs of Siemens (China).

Gongshan Zhu - Director, Chair elect 2018

Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association (APVIA)

Gong Shan Zhu is Chairman of the Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association. He is also Chairman of Golden Concord Holdings Limited (GCL) and Founder and Honorary Chairman of GCL Sun Charity Foundation. Chairman Zhu’s leadership includes serving as a Member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
