Antony Karembu

Principal Renewable Energy Specialist,

African Development Bank

Karembu is an experienced investment officer and renewable energy specialist whose 16 years’ career spans various roles in project finance and international development. He has worked with leading power utilities, independent power producers, and climate funds and multilateral development banks.

Karembu is currently a Principal Renewable Energy Specialist in the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Department at the African Development Bank (AfDB) where his responsibilities include structuring and financing bankable renewable energy projects, design of innovative financing approaches and mobilization of resources from internal and external climate finance facilities. In this role he has led several operations in Utility Scale Battery Storage Systems (South Africa), Geothermal projects (Ethiopia and Kenya), Mini Grid and Net Metering with Storage (Ghana and Rwanda), Solar projects (Desert to Power Initiative, Mega Solar Initiative) and Wind projects (Kenya).

Prior to joining the Renewable Energy Department, Mr. Antony designed several interventions as a PPP Advisor for the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) in supporting policy, legal and regulatory frameworks in Rwanda, Union of Comoros Islands, Mali, Burundi and Mozambique; later as a Senior Energy Economist in the AfDB Regional Directorate West Africa, where he led power sector operations in Nigeria, Gambia, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia .

In his previous life, he worked as an Energy Program Officer for the KfW German Development Bank in charge of the Renewable Energy Portfolio and held several positions within Kenya’s Power Utilities and technical teams of the East Africa Power Pool.

He holds a Masters in Energy Studies – Energy Economics (Distinction) from the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP), University of Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom.
