Brazil accelerates in solar PV energy and becomes the eighth largest country in the world ranking of the source, informs ABSOLAR

São Paulo, March 2023 – According to the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (ABSOLAR), based on the data of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) release, Brazil entered, for the first time, on the list of the top ten countries with the highest accumulated installed capacity from photovoltaic solar source. The country ended 2022 with 24 gigawatts (GW) of solar PV operating power and took, for the first time, eighth place in the international ranking.

The data consider the sum of large-scale solar PV plants with small and medium-sized self solar PV generation systems, on roofs, facades of buildings and also on small plots of land, based on the total accumulated capacity at the end of 2022.

According to the mapping, Brazil's eighth position is the result of around 10 gigawatts (GW) added in the year 2022. As a result, last year alone, the solar sector attracted more than R$ 45.7 billion in new investments, growth of 64% in relation to the financial values ​​accumulated until the end of 2021 in the country.

When analyzing the accumulated installed capacity of solar PV technology between 2021 and 2022, Brazil rose five positions in the world ranking of photovoltaic source in the period, moving from 13th place in 2021 to eighth in 2022. The ranking is led by China (392 GW), followed by the United States (111 GW), Japan (78.8 GW), Germany (66.5 GW) and India (62.8 GW).

Currently, the solar PV source is the second largest in the national electricity matrix, with 26 GW in operation in Brazil, responsible for more than R$ 128.5 billion in investments, more than 783.7 thousand jobs accumulated since 2012 and avoided the emission of 34.5 million tons of CO2 in electricity generation.

For the Chairman of ABSOLAR's Board of Administration, Ronaldo Koloszuk, solar PV is the most competitive renewable source in the country, being a strong locomotive for sustainable development, generating jobs and income, attracting investments, diversifying the electrical matrix and benefits for the whole society. “In addition to being competitive and affordable, solar PV energy is quick to install and helps ease consumers' pockets, reducing their electricity costs by up to 90%”, he comments.
